Günter Kerschbaumer, a young producer, does not carry an Italian sounding name but he works in the most extreme northerly part of the peninsula: la Valle Isarco, in Alto Adige, very close to the frontier with Austria. There, north of Bressanone, the vines climb up to 700m above sea level and beyond. The climatic conditions are propitious for the development of grapes which have an extraordinary vitality, fresh (acidity) and with a good level of sugar. In the hands of Kerschbaumer their wines translate into a precise style, sharp, like a razor, but also confidential without being cold or uncommunicative. Try the Kerner made from a local delicately aromatic varietal and the magnificent Pinot Grigio, Riesling or Sylvaner.
