Jean-Marc Quarin was born in the Châteauneuf-du-pape appellation. His grandparents were both winegrowers - from Italy and Languedoc-Roussillon in France. He holds a degree (with distinction) from Bordeaux’s Faculty of Oenology and has had practical winemaking experience from one of France's top domains. In 1989, Jean-Marc Quarin created Bordeaux Quintessence which is now known as “the Carnets de Dégustations - an independent guide for the discerning wine lover'.

Jean-Marc is based in Bordeaux which enables him to follow the vintages very closely, tasting the new wines very early, and often, and discovering the most talented winegrowers - he says: "a wine's potential depends on what happens in the vineyard".

Jean-Marc Quarin has written over 7,000 pages about Bordeaux wines and his database contains over 26,000 tasting notes. Last year he was awarded the Nadine de Rothschild 'Coup de Coeur' Prize for his book the Guide Quarin des Vins de Bordeaux (Solar). In her presentation speech, Baroness Nadine de Rothschild declared: "On behalf of the jury, I would like to point out the extreme intelligence of the introduction - 50 pages that will definitely set a new benchmark in the history of our understanding of Bordeaux wines."
